Virgil Abloh – The
design polymath whose
creative intuitiveness
transcended boundaries.
The “3% approach”:
Abloh, trained architect, engineer, and design polymath changed the game of fashion, with what he christened the “3% approach”.
The founder of Off-White, head of menswear for Louis Vuitton, and offered a parallel position working across parent company LVMH’s portfolio of 75 brands, including the Hublot brand, Dom Perignon, Bvlgari, Givenchy and Berluti, was instrumental in setting the tone, for the style of a generation, introducing his unique high fashion athleisure and streetwear designs.
Throughout his career at Vuitton, Abloh engaged in numerous design collaborations including the Off-White/Nike partnership, furniture designs for Ikea, refillable bottles for Evian, designs for Levi’s, Jimmy Choo, Timberland and Moncler, while also DJing prolifically, and, creating design album covers for artists such as A$AP Rocky, 2-Chainz, Jay-Z, Lil Uzi Vert, Kanye West, Pop Smoke and Pusha T.
Abloh will be remembered as central to the introduction of intellectualism to streetwear and, equally, introducing hip-hop, and skate culture to the world of high luxury fashion. A pioneer, and as a young designer of African heritage to helm the creative affairs of a major European fashion brand, Abloh has single-handedly turned the design and fashion discipline into a hotly sought-after career path among contemporary youth.
