      Industry.

British actor Idris Elba has announced plans to permanently relocate to África within the coming decade, aiming to support and strengthen the continent’s growing film industry.

Known for his roles in acclaimed series such as Luther y The Wire, the 52-year-old actor is currently involved in projects to establish film studios in both Zanzibar, Tanzania, and Accra, Ghana.

With ghanés y Sierra Leonean heritage, Elba has a deep personal connection to Africa and seeks to leverage his influence to promote the African film industry, underscoring the importance of Africans controlling the narrative of their stories.

“I would certainly consider settling down here; not even consider, it’s going to happen,”

Elba shared during an interview in Accra, signaling his commitment to reside on the continent to support this vision. He emphasized that an effective, long-term contribution to African cinema would necessitate an in-country presence.

Reflecting a Pan-African approach, Elba expressed his intent to reside across multiple locations, including Acra, Freetown, y Zanzibar, moving where significant stories are being told. His ambition includes producing a film in his forthcoming Accra-based studio.

Elba, who portrayed Nelson Mandela in the 2013 film Long Walk to Freedom, emphasizes that African involvement should span all stages of the filmmaking process—encompassing on-screen roles, production, financing, distribution, and marketing. In his view, this comprehensive engagement is essential for African filmmakers to authentically represent their narratives and culture on a global scale.
